Wap_007

Overlooking the world of SBS2003 and Office Systems 2003

The Web Application, from which Wap_007 is derived, comes from an application that was presented in an MSDN News article in the July/August, 2000, issue (Vol. 9, No. 4); entitled "Building a Web-Based Event Calendar", by Scott Semyan.  It has one Calendar page, and subsidiary pages for adding and deleting calendar events.  As a calendar, especially when you are used to the Outlook calendar, it is a pathetic thing.  But it has all the parts needed for a significant calendar.  It defined a Calendar event with three fields: database ID, date, and a 100 character text field.  What ever was entered in the character field was presented in the day's space in the calendar.  The missing piece is the ability to expand an appointment to a more detailed presentation of more information about the appointment.  Of course, it was all there in the calendar, so what's to expand?  (Poison face here)

I expanded this frame work in three ways: 1) I set up an Outlook Public Calendar to be the input front-end.  2) I included all the major fields in an Outlook calendar. 3) I included another page to display the details of the appointment in tabular form.  (Happy face here.)

But it is still a rudimentary application.  There is no free/busy display.  No conflict avoidance.  No appointment object rendering.  Not even an update option--though that is an easy thing to include.  All these are left as exercises to the casual reader.  Serious readers can buy whatever customizations they might want.

For the basic operation of the application, see the downloadable text and code from the original article.  These are included in the zip of the Exchange/Web application package that is included in the product pages.
