The specialized MMCs are built with specific snapins
installed. You need to go through what you have to see if any that are
there do what you are specifically interested in doing. But, when you find
one, and it has some features that you don't like, you don't have to just live
with it. You can build your own from the parts that are available to
you. Get your self a new console--Click Start, click Run,
type mmc, and then click OK--click on Console|Add/Remove
Snapins. A panel comes up showing the list of snapins already in the
console--should be empty. Click the Add button, and you get a list of
snapins that are available on your system. Choose the ones you want.
It isn't necessary to do it all at once. You can build one thing, add a
folder and build another function. When you have what you want, save it
with a friendly name in you MMC directory--E:\Documents
and Settings\"Your-user-name"\My Documents\My Consoles\.
When I found the IIS console on my workstation, I wanted to use it to see how
things were setup on the server. It can do this, but the connection
doesn't persist, that is, every time I opened it to look at the server, I had to
type in the server name. However, when I built my own Remote IIS Console,
I used a connection snapin, which does persist, and all I have to do is expand
the tree to see what is defined on the Server.
The MMCs and the snapin modules are the first "product" from
Microsoft that uses the new WMI tools. You will probably be hearing more
of these tools as soon as you move to Windows 2000 network. Specifically,
the Group Policy facilities of the Windows 2000 Server, which is the millennial
replacement of the PDC, uses this technology. And then there is the LDAP
service. More on that when I get there.
